Please go to http://ce.nurse.com/ce97-60 and read the article, then post your reply for credit.
After reading this article, do you have a better understanding of Short Bowel Syndrome?
How are our treatment of these patients different from the way our patient's are treated? _________________ Ann Coppley, RN,CPN |

This article sounds very familar related to our frequent flyer, A.M. She has had multiples line infections which the article listed as one of the complications of short gut when needing TPN and having to have a central line to provide adequate calories, electrolytes which cannot infuse through a PIV. The only real difference I see in this article related to the care of the short gut patients is the mention of the LILT procedure. I am not familar with this like I am the STEP procedure. Thanks for sharing this article, Ann and Cindy. |

The only difference i found in the article is the option of the LILT procedure. The primary goal of all treatment are to eliminate dependence from TPN therapy. |

The article is very inteesting - and a good review of the SBS with its treatment and complications.
Was unfamiliar with LILT procedure - it seems advantags would be is that it could cover a greater population of children that would benefit from it. |

I agree, I'm not familar with the LILT procedure. I also thought some of the info about bowel rehab was interesting. We had a short gut kid a few years ago who went to another state for this very thing. |

Informative article about short gut patients. Helped to understand other intestinal conditions resulting in resection of the bowel - short gut syndrome. |

I found the information very helpful, definitely built on my knowledge of SBS. I thought the section on adaptation was really interesting. |
