All of us know that 4E is a very stressful unit to work on almost every
shift. Does this article help with ways that might help you handle the
stress? Had you ever thought about how our patients are under stress
and what you might do to help them?

Thanks for the article, Ann. The most interesting part of the article for me is the comparison to the stress we encounter at work as "mini-hurricanes." I definitely think the types of patients, acuity of the patients and the situations that occur on 4E are mini-hurricanes. I think the "eye" of the hurricane for us is our lunch/dinner time as this is the time we can step away, breathe, and have time. That is one of the reasons break time is so important as the chaos on the unit like the winds of the storm begin as soon as your break is over (or...before it is over....as in many cases).

This article had some good information about destressing yourself and our patients. We all need to remember, even if they are annoying, our patients and families are under tremendous stress. Being kind and gentle with them will ease that. Remembering to take care of ourselves is also very important. We will be no good to our patients, families or ourselves if we do not care for ourselves first. Thank you for this article great information. Smile
